Dan 1 Camden’s Dan Ho took part in the Clipper Round the World Race.

A SPUR-of-the-moment decision led to a life-changing voyage for former Camden doctor Dan Ho.

Despite having no sailing experience Dr Ho (pictured) took part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race as a medic.

“Two years ago I happened to be sitting in a train at St Leonards and saw a poster that said ‘Are you ready for the race of your life’,” he said.

And so began an 11-month voyage around the world, which finished in London last month.

“It is a race of 12 yachts and each has a crew of up to 24 people, including a skipper,” Dr Ho said.

“Not everyone does the whole trip. Nine people did the round-the-world trip and the rest were leggers who came on for one leg [of the voyage].

“‘I learnt a lot about myself and how I would cope with lack of sleep, fatigue and dealing with the crew, a bunch of strangers you are living with in very close quarters.”

While he was on board to help with any medical emergencies, Dr Ho also helped to sail the boat and experienced massive waves and storms.

Dr Ho’s crew was forced to change skippers three times due to unforseen circumstances and, as a result came in 10th, but he said the trip had given him a new perspective on life.

“I’m much more excited, even though I have come back with no job,” he said.

“There’s no fear and I know now, no matter what I do I will be able to cope and survive.”
