Shortly after 9pm, a truck laden with plastic sheeting rolled over blocking all lanes of the Great Western Highway near Tollgate Rd and trapping the driver in the cabin.
Police Rescue, NSW Ambulance paramedics, Fire & Rescue NSW, Roads and Maritime Services and local police from Blue Mountain Area Command attended.
The 49-year-old Long Jetty man was trapped in the cabin for three hours before being released and taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.
He underwent mandatory blood and urine testing.
A Police Rescue officer received a large cut to his forearm while working to release the man; he continued until the man was released, before seeking medical treatment for the wound.
Commuters on the Great Western Highway experienced long delays while the debris was cleared off the road and the truck removed.
A number of diversions were put in place, and drivers were asked to take the Bells Line Rd or delay their travel to Sydney but by 6.40am all westbound and eastbound lanes were reopened.
On the Gazette’s Facebook page, Simone Preston, said her family was stuck during the diversion for 20 minutes but were lucky to be “one of the 20 or so cars let through to clear the right lane”. Some people, she said, had “slept in their cars till 2am”.
