TweetFacebookA JERILDERIE couple were lucky to escape injury when a truck ploughed into their kitchen on Tuesday morning.

The driver of the B-double, carrying shipping containers, was trapped in the cabin of his vehicle for a short time after it struck the house on Waloona Way about 4.15am.

The double-brick home – which backs onto the intersection of the Newell Highway and Conargo Road – sustained significant structural damage.

Acting Inspector Trent Swinton, from Deniliquin police, said the heavy vehicle was heading north on the highway when it failed to negotiate a right-hand turn at the T-intersection.

“It left the road and continued into a house and garage,” Inspector Swinton said.

“The driver was trapped for a short time before being released and taken to hospital.”

Deputy captain of Jerilderie Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) John Crittenden said the truck went through the back fence of the property andpicked up a large tree before it careered into the kitchen area of the house.

Mr Crittenden said the impact “took out” the roof and walls and “wrecked” two cars parked in the garage.

An Ambulance NSW spokeswoman said the male driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Jerilderie District Hospital in a stable condition.

No further information about the driver was available.

Inspector Swinton said the occupants – a couple – weren’t injured.

The Newell Highway is currently being closed intermittently to allow the truck to be salvaged.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
