Footage of the robbery has been released in the hope someone will recognise the offender.

On August 14, a man flagged down the bus about 8.45pm as it travelled south along its usual route on Brooks Street near the William Street intersection.

The 57-year-old female driver stopped the bus and the man, wearing a hooded top, got on board with his face concealed.

He produced a silver pistol and demanded cash.

Police said the man put the money in a backpack and fled on foot.

There were no passengers on the bus at the time.

Police were called and the bus was forensically examined.

Central Hunter crime manager Detective Inspector John Zdrilic said police needed help from the public to find the man.

“Anyone who wants to point guns at other members of the community doesn’t deserve to exist with other members of the community,” he said.

“We are seeking assistance from the community to identify this person so he can be dealt with accordingly.

“We’re releasing the CCTV footage from the bus in the hope someone will identify him.”

The man is believed to be Caucasian, in his teens or early 20s, 160 to 165cm tall with a thin build.

He was last seen wearing a light grey, hooded top, dark pants, white runners and carrying a backpack.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Maitland police on 4934 0200.
