WHEN James Tran’s son was born eight weeks premature, his heart stopped beating for a minute and a half.

“It was the longest 90 seconds of my life,” Mr Tran said.

Thanks to neonatal intensive care and special care nursery staff, young Matthieu is now a healthy, happy two-year-old.

But his father said he would never forget the support his family received in their darkest hour from the Miracle Babies Foundation.

“After picking up Matty from the hospital to take him home, I promised I would try to find a way to help and support the Foundation so that they can continue the work that they do for other families in need such as mine,” Mr Tran said.

True to his word, Mr Tran hosts a charity event for the Foundation at his Huong Xua Restaurant in Canley Heights every October.

This year’s event, on October 4, will see people compete to eat the contents of a huge bowl of soup.

“Last year we only raised just over $4000, but this year, with a bigger support group, I’m hoping to raise $30,000,” Mr Tran said.

“We have local businesses getting involve and also a few local sporting teams volunteering on the day too.

“The challengers will be competing with our Huong Xua bowl, which consist of 500 grams of meat (beef), 500 grams of noodles and 1.5 litres of beef soup.

“The first competitor to finish the bowl with soup and all wins.

“Last year the winner took only 11 minutes and 28 seconds, but this year I have a feeling that it might be even quicker.

“First prize will be $1000, second $500 and third will be $250.

“We will also have a raffle drawn on the day with a Samsung flat screen TV, an iPad, and many more other prizes to be won, along with $300 worth of food vouchers from Huong Xua.

Tickets can be bought at either Huong Xua store Cabramatta or Canley Heights, so I urge everyone to dig deep for this worthy cause.

“If you have a little bit of time to spare, come on down, makes some noise on the day and donate to your local Miracle Babies Foundation.

“There will also be lion dancing and firecrackers on the day. Lion dancing starts at 3pm and the main event will start at 3.30pm.”
