Local Ros Trott had a brush with fame recently as she met Paul hogan at his performance in Port Pirie.A local woman was lucky enough to enjoy a beer, a chat and a brush with fame when Australian icon Paul Hogan visited the region recently.

Ros Trott attended the Port Pirie show which was based on his life in general and how he got to where he is today with some comedy thrown in.

A long-time fan of Paul Hogan, Ms Trott said the show was really funny and the opportunity to meet Paul Hogan was fantastic.

“I was totally stunned to have a beer with a movie star, he is a fantastic bloke,” she said.

“I have been a fan of his all my life, I love his crocodile movies.”

Ms Trott asked Paul Hogan why he did not perform in Port Augusta and he said he would have loved to come here but there was no suitable or available venue.

A Port Augusta City Council representative said the management groups for Paul Hogan’s performance did not contact council to ask about venues as can happen with events that tour the region.

“We offer a venue at a fee for hire and then the group makes its money from ticket sales,” the representative said.

“Often because they are performing in Whyalla and Port Pirie, Port Augusta is seen by the booking group to be too close to both venues to host a third performance in the region.”

Port Augusta has multiple venues for hosting events and performances, including the 420 seat Lea Memorial Theatre, the Barracks which can hold 500 people and the institute theatre which has the capacity to seat 122 people.

Previously, Port Augusta has hosted well-known acts such as Kitty Flannagan, Jimoen, Rhythms of Ireland and Diesel.

The new Port Augusta Community and Sporting Hub will offer another alternative venue for indoor and outdoor events.

“We’ve also had some fantastic performers that visit Port Augusta, and some of the shows have not been strongly supported,” the council representative said.

“These groups need people to pre-purchase tickets and if we can get strong attendance at shows, Port Augusta will gain a reputation for being able to draw an audience and this in turn will attract more acts to the city.”
