Port Augusta junior footballers were treated on Wednesday afternoon with Adelaide Crows legend Darren Jarman hosting a clinic at Central Augusta Football Club.

It is the second year in a row the Crows legend has come to Port Augusta to host a clinic.

This year saw about 60 youngsters turn up, which was close to double the amount from last year.

The clinic is part of the Toyota Country Footy Drive where Jarman travels through regional South Australia and Broken Hill coaching kids aged between six and 13.

This year the footy drive will head to 18 regional centres.

Jarman said the clinics were about kids enjoying football.

“I’m not here to teach the kids how to play the game, they’ve got good coaches and programs here to do that,” he said.

“I’m here to have 45 minutes with the kids to make sure they have some fun.”

Jarman said Port Augusta is a great place to host the clinics.

“We had it here at Centrals last time and they have been fantastic hosts,” he said.

“It went really well tonight [Wednesday]…it’s just about giving something back to the country people.

“There is a heap of giveaways [during the clinics], we give the club some boxing gear for fitness, some tackle bags, footballs for the kids, they love it.

“When you see the kids smiling it makes it all worthwhile.”

Northpoint Toyota general manager Kym Grover said it was fantastic to have Darren Jarman come to town for not only the kids but for any local footy lover.

“It’s good for Toyota, for the Adelaide Football Club and the local club Central Augusta and the kids,” he said.

“It’s not just the kids getting excited, you would be surprised how many of the A graders want a chance to have a chat with Jars.”

Mr Grover said he was really impressed with the turn out on Wednesday.

“The ones that came last time have obviously remembered how good it was and they have come in droves again this year.”
