The information session will tackle a variety of topics including divorce, relationships, children, property settlement, family dispute resolution, recovery Orders, Commonwealth Location Orders and Hague Convention Orders.

Legal Services Commission family law specialist Christine McCappin and legal adviser/ community education officer Tahlia Wanganeen will head the session, providing ample information about this complicated area of law.

The experts will also be happy to answer any further questions participants may have in relation to any other areas of law.

Ms Wanganeen said many people may not be aware of the formal processes within Australian Family Law, and this session will be a great opportunity for the community to seek help.

“The more we inform people about those kinds of [legal] requirements, I think it will help them with their legal issue, if and when that arises,” she said.

“It’s a bit preemptive, but if they have the information before the event arises, then they can actually deal better with the situation they’re in.”

Ms McCappin said the educational program is designed to help people who might have some misconceptions about what to expect with regard to family law matters.

She said the free session will also provide information about how to access legal advice or legal aid through the Legal Services Commission.

“There may be some questions about legal aid and what we are able to provide,” Ms McCappin said.

“It’s to let people know we have experienced lawyers here, so we can act for people, we don’t just give general advice – we can go in to bat for people if required.”

The Legal Services Commission is encouraging anyone to come along to the session, which is being held this Thursday from 2-3pm at the Cooinda conference room, Flinders Terrace.

Previous sessions of a similar nature have been very popular and well-received by participants.
