New to the role: Lonica Collins is the new Esperance Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service captain.LONICA Collins has been appointed fire captain, the first woman to hold the position in the Esperance Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service.
Ms Collins started out in 2004 as a junior running member, where she advanced to senior running member and eventually joined the brigade.
“I’ve been here six years now,” she said.
“I’ve done three years as treasurer and this is my first year as captain.
“It’s exciting, I’ve had a busy couple of weeks meeting all the captains of different brigades, the SES and the police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Richard Moore.”
Ms Collins said there were many reasons she loved the brigade.
“I love the community side of it, Australia Day, the family fun days and showing people what we do,” she said.
“I love the adrenaline of going to call outs and the teamwork, we’ve got a really good team at the moment so that’s been helpful.”
Balancing the volunteer captaincy with her employment at Aurizon, Ms Collins said she did not have too much difficulty juggling commitments.
“You’re not pressured to go to everything,” she said.
“If you feel uncomfortable going to car accidents then you don’t have to go.”
