Picture: Simon BennettVISITORS to Cabra-Vale Diggers Club may soon have a convenient place to stay after Fairfield Council approved a proposal to amend its local environmental plan to enable the development of a hotel at the site.
The approval allows the club to lodge an application to build an 80-100 room hotel on the corner of Bartley and Phelps streets, Canley Vale.
The item was raised at last Tuesday night’s council meeting, with all but two councillors in favour.
Councillor Lawrence White spoke in favour of the proposal, saying such a development was needed in the area.
“The council is allowing the club to have an additional activity,” he said. “It won’t change anything else.
“This hotel is a much-needed facility and a much-needed service, and I think the Cabravale community will benefit from it greatly.”
Councillor Nhan Tran said he believed the the area needed a “decent hotel for guests”.
“I have a lot of friends from overseas that come here and attend community events, and I have to drive them to their hotels in Bankstown,” he said.
“I know that Cabra-Vale Diggers Club is very strict and they do the right thing, so I think for this one to propose a hotel, it’s a good idea, especially for overseas visitors.”
Councillor Zaya Toma voted against the proposal, saying he believed it would encourage gambling.
“We can not allow this problem to get any worse than what it is,” he said.
“I feel for all the families who have relatives addicted to gambling so I can not support it.”
Councillor Charbel Saliba also voted against the proposal.
Cabra-Vale Diggers Club group general manager Michael Foulkes said he was thrilled with the outcome.
“We’re very excited and I think it will be an asset to the area,” he said.
“It’s a way to diversify our business and move away from the reliance on gambling.”
Mr Foulkes said the club would now lodge a development application with the council to build the 80-100 room hotel.
If it is approved, the hotel could be built within two years.
